Possibly the most ancient of all vegetables, Cucumber seeds have been found that carbon-dated back nearly 12,000 years. Cucumbers, more than 90% water, were used in ancient times to quench thirst on desert trips. Very tender, will not survive extreme harsh conditions. If cucumbers are grown up on trellis or stakes, the fruit set will increase. Staking cucumbers reduces the incidence of fruit rot because the fruit is less crowded and has better air circulation. Like all vine crops, cucumbers will be more productive if they are picked often. Combat striped cucumber beetles by handpicking early morning when the dew makes them sluggish, or use floating row covers, removing when they flower. Cucumbers turn bitter when they get thirsty. Water each day after picking. Using compost in conjunction with row covers (rather than either alone) increase cucumber yields. Ideal Germination Temperature is 32 °C, emergence takes 13 days at 15 °C, 6 days at 20 °C, 4 days at 25 °C.
